- Insulating oil is used in transformers for both insulation and cooling (to release the heat generated in the windings to the atmosphere). It also provides valuable information about the current condition of the transformer. The performance of the oil also affects the performance of the transformer. Tests performed on oils provide reliable information about both the quality of the oil and the performance of the transformer operation and are carried out in order to take the necessary precautions. An ideal transformer oil is expected to have a voltage withstand of 60 kV. Power windings and current-carrying parts should be designed to withstand rated voltage and frequency continuously and overvoltage pulses for a certain period of time.
